Summer Camp

This year KYK9 participated in Dreams With Wings Summer Camps, one for children with autism and other for children with Down Syndrome. Collaborating with Nathalie Green, owner and riding instructor at TRAIL Therapy Horses, we spent two days at her farm in Simpsonville, KY. Most campers were able to ride a therapy horse and also help train Remy, Scout and Pocket.

We had a variety of training activities. A favorite was to take the scent of one child, have the kids leave in a group, and then the dogs would have to find the group and identify the correct child. The kids were especially excited about being able to help train a puppy.

But, for me the best part was watching Remy work with the kids with Down Syndrome. She had a natural connection with these kids. She was so relaxed and loving with them, it was as if she had found her kid home.

T.R.A.I.L. student Lucie Ledford on Lilly and Nathalie Green on Smarty returning from a trail ride. Lucie rode in the rain and was found by KYK9 search dog Scout. Lucie smiled the entire time, saying "I'm fired up! I'm fired up!" Go Lucie!!
