JJH Comment: This is tragic, tragic lesson which shows why scent-specific trailing dogs should be deployed ASAP in missing persons cases. The coroner found that 8 y old Leiby Kletzky was alive for at least 1 day after he was kidnapped. If search dogs had been used within the first 24 hours, they could have trailed the Leiby to the apartment where he was left alone and alive by his kidnapper who went to work for the day. Leiby was just blocks from home. This is just horrible.
NEW YORK (AP) — A man was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on murder and kidnapping charges in the killing and dismemberment of an 8-year-old boy who was abducted off a Brooklyn street last week.
Levi Aron was indicted on a total of eight counts. Prosecutors allege he lured Leiby Kletzky to his home after the little boy got lost while walking home from a day camp and asked him for help.
Detectives later found the boy's severed feet, wrapped in plastic, in Aron's freezer, as well as a cutting board and three bloody carving knives. The rest of the boy's body was discovered in bags inside a red suitcase in a trash bin.
The medical examiner said earlier Wednesday that Leiby was given a cocktail of painkillers and muscle relaxants before he was smothered.
